From Proto-West Germanic *guddjō, from Proto-Germanic *gudjô (“invoker, pagan priest”). Cognate with Proto-Norse ᚷᚢᛞᛁᛃᚨ (gudija), Old Norse goði, Gothic 𐌲𐌿𐌳𐌾𐌰 (gudja, “priest”). Appears in the historical record as the personal name *Gydda.
