Etymology
Compound of 赤 (aka, “red”, used here to mean "clearly, obviously, completely") + の (no, possessive marker) + 他人 (tanin, “other person”).[1][2][3][4]
First attested in a 浄瑠璃 (jōruri, “puppet theater”) script from 1702.[1]
