Etymology

Ultimately from Middle Chinese compound Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value).

First cited in Natsume Soseki's works in 1905.[1] The positive term 可能 (kanō, possible) isn't cited until a few years later in 1909. However, the related term 可能性 (kanōsei, possibility) is cited earlier in 1881, in the 哲学字彙 (Tetsugaku Jii, Philosophy Dictionary) compiled by Inoue Tetsujirō,[2][3] suggesting that the terms Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value) and 可能 (kanō) may have been in use earlier than first cited.
