эрямс

Erzya

Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *eŕa-, perhaps inherited from Proto-Uralic *elä- (to live), but both the vowel e and the consonant ŕ are irregular. Keresztes suggests an irregular development due to avoidance of homonymy with the prohibitve auxiliary иля (iľa). Compare also Estonian ära (from Proto-Finnic *älä-) with a similar phonetic shift *l > r.

Alternatively, cognate to *eŕ- (see эрзя (erźa)), which perhaps derives from *irkä~*ürkä (man, son, boy).
