Etymology

A shortening of the obsolete yunusbalığı (literally Jonah fish), after the story of the Qur'anic prophet Jonah. The form yunusbalığı is preserved in the Turkish name yunusbalığıgiller, used alongside yunusgiller for the dolphin family (Delphinidae).
