Etymology
From Proto-Finnic *valta, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *waldą (“might, power, authority”) or Proto-Norse [script needed] (*walda-) (compare Swedish våld, German Gewalt, Dutch geweld, Icelandic vald).[1] Attested in the first New Testament in Finnish, Se Wsi Testamenti (1548) as walda.
