From Proto-Finnic *topi, from Proto-Germanic *dawīni-, *dawēn-, or *dawa-. Compare Old Norse dán (death), Icelandic sví-dái (dead (of natural causes, for farm animals)), and Old Norse (unconsciousness, hibernation), respectively. Cognate to Livonian te’b, tö’b.
