From West Proto-Germanic *skrībaną, a late borrowing from Latin scrībō (“write”). Cognate with Old Frisian skrīva (West Frisian skriuwe), Old Saxon skrīvan, skrīƀan (Low German schrieven), Old Dutch scrīvan (Dutch schrijven), Old High German scrīban (German schreiben).
