Cognates include Finnish soida (to sound), soittaa (to play an instrument), Livonian sõitõ (to punish), Votic sõitta (to scold), Ingrian soittaa (to play, to hurry), Livvi šoijata (to hit, to whip), Ludian soittoa (to play an instrument), Veps soitta (to play an instrument; to knock, to hit), Northern Sami čuodjat (to ring, to sound); possibly also Eastern Mari шокташ (šoktaš, to play an instrument), Khanty [script needed] (sĭj), Mansi суй (suj, speech; voice; noise) and Hungarian zaj (noise).
