Etymology
From an earlier *pëdyll, borrowed from Late Latin padūlem (“swamp”), from a metathesis of Latin palūdem. Compare Romanian pădure, which shows the same change in meaning. Compare also Italian padule, which keeps the Latin sense.[1]
