Hungarian

Etymology

There are two interpretations by two different sources:

  1. From the same unattested stem as in pirít + -os (adjective-forming suffix).[1]
  2. From pír (blush).[2]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈpiroʃ]
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: pi‧ros
  • Rhymes: -oʃ

Adjective

piros (comparative pirosabb, superlative legpirosabb)

  1. red (often specifically a lighter red than vörös)
    Coordinate term: (darker red) vörös

Usage notes

"In Hungarian, piros […is] associated with blood inside the body, [] whereas vörös is associated with blood spilled […and] the fact that after a while, blood spilled tends to get darker could explain the inclusion of darker shades in vörös."[2] Common collocations include piros lap (red card in football), piros rózsa (red rose) and piros tojás (red egg, given by a girl to a boy during Easter).[2]

Declension
