Etymology

From Proto-Hmong-Mien *ntju̯əŋH (tree). Cognate with Iu Mien ndiangx. Most likely a recent reborrowing from Thai ต้น (dtôn) ("tree", "trunk", "stalk") or Lao ຕົ້ນ (ton) ("tree", "trunk", "stalk") to explain the change in nasal pronunciation and final syablle.
