Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *kauka-, either from Proto-Germanic *hauhaz, or from Proto-Finno-Ugric *kawka, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *kewk-. Compare Erzya кувака (kuvaka, long, lengthy) and Khanty ҳөв (h̦ôw, faraway, long). Cognate to Finnish kauko- and Votic kauka.
