Etymology 2
Attested at least since 1760s. Borrowed from German Kontor, from Middle Low German kontôr, komtôr, komptor, from Middle Dutch contoor, contoir, comptoir, from Middle French contoir, comtoir, comptoir, from conter, compter + -oir, from Latin computāre and -tōrium. Doublet of kontuar.
Brückner suggests that A instead of O in the first syllable may have been influenced by the paronymical attraction to kantyny, but cf. Dutch kantoor, Middle Low German kantôr.
