From Middle High German jōlen (“to sing loudly”), of uncertain origin. Related to Middle Low German jolen, jȫlen (“to revel, exult, jubilate”), Dutch jolen (“to be excited, rejoice”). Possibly equivalent to jo + -len. Compare also Middle High German golen (“to sing, sing loudly”).
