From Proto-Cushitic *sonb- ~ *sonp-. Cognates include Sidamo shambo and Somali sambab, Oromo somba, Gedeo shonbo, Qimant samb, Blin sämbi, Beja šambut and Jiiddu sabi[1]. Related to Amharic ሳምባ (samba).
