Perhaps from Proto-Germanic *glitinōną, from a root cognate with Old Norse glitra + Proto-Germanic *-inōną. Ultimately from *ǵʰel- (to shine, shimmer, glow). Related to Old English glisnian (to glisten), Old English glīdan (to glide). More at glitter, glisten, glint, glass.
