From Ottoman Turkish كیجه, گیجه (gece, night, evening), from Old Anatolian Turkish كیجه (gejä, night), from Proto-Turkic *kēče (night, evening). Cognate to geç (late) and gecikmek (to be late). Compare Turkic cognates such as Old Turkic 𐰛𐰃𐰲𐰀 (kéče, evening, late in the evening), Karakhanid [script needed] (kéčē, night, at night), Turkmen gije (night), Yakut киэһэ (kiehe, evening), and Hungarian késik (to be late) a Turkic borrowing from the same root. Unrelated to geç- (to pass) which has a short /e/.
