Etymology
From an earlier *velpër via /v/ > /ð/ backing, from *velpën, from Proto-Albanian *welpinā, diminutive of Proto-Indo-European *h₂u̯l(o)p ~ *h₂ulp (“(red) fox”) (compare Italian volpe, Lithuanian lãpė, Greek αλεπού (alepoú), Armenian աղվես (aġves))[1]. Compare dhespër for the same phonetic phenomenon.
