From Ottoman Turkish دگل (değil), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *tegül (is not).

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (tügül, is not; not only) (in Kul Tigin inscription); Karakhanid [script needed] (tegül, is not); Kazakh түгiл (tügil), Kyrgyz түгүл (tügül), Karachay-Balkar тюл (tül), Azerbaijani deyil, Bashkir түгел (tügel), Uzbek tugul.
