From Ottoman Turkish دگل (değil), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *tegül (“is not”).
Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (tügül, “is not; not only”) (in Kul Tigin inscription); Karakhanid [script needed] (tegül, “is not”); Kazakh түгiл (tügil), Kyrgyz түгүл (tügül), Karachay-Balkar тюл (tül), Azerbaijani deyil, Bashkir түгел (tügel), Uzbek tugul.
