From Proto-Celtic *blēdanī, possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyd- (“pale”), though the semantic connection is weak.[1] See also Lithuanian blaĩvas (“whitish, blue, sober”), Proto-West Germanic *blait, Albanian blehurë.
Celtic cognates include Welsh blwydd, blwyddyn, Old Breton blened, Cornish bloodh, Old Irish blíadain.
