From Proto-Germanic *andawlitiz, equivalent to and (“against, off”) + wlite (“aspect, appearance, looks”). Cognate with Old Norse andlit (Swedish anlete, Norwegian Nynorsk andlet) and Old High German antlizzi (German Antlitz).
