Etymology
From Ottoman Turkish عموجه (ʿamuca), from older آبجه (abıca, abuca),[1] equivalent to Proto-Turkic *apa (“father”) + *-ča. Compare also Proto-Turkic *abučka (“uncle”).[2]
Nişanyan explains the change from /b/ to /m/ as an influence of Arabic عَمّ (ʕamm).
