Suez

English

Etymology

From Arabic اَلسُّوَيْس (as-suways). This is sometimes said to come from a supposed Egyptian suan (beginning), but this appears to be a ghost word or misinterpretation, as no similar word with such a meaning exists in Egyptian. (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
