Etymology

From Russian самое́д (samojéd), probably from Sami *saam-edne (“land of the people”); compare Finnish Suomi (“Finn”).[1][2]

Russian folk etymology derived the term from сам (sam, “self”) + есть (jestʹ, “eat”), "self eaters."[3]
