From Proto-Balto-Slavic *skaujás, from Proto-Indo-European *skowy-ós, from *skwey- (“needle, prickle, thorn”).

Compare Albanian hu (“stake, pole; penis”) (from Proto-Albanian *skuna < *skuja + *-na, from Proto-Indo-European *skuy-ós).
