Etymology

Possibly related to Proto-Indo-European *ǵr̥h₂nóm (“grain”). Possibly a borrowing from Iranian. Per Derksen, cognate with Avestan 𐬓𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬥𐬀‎ (xᵛarəna, “food”).
