Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *telktei, from Proto-Indo-European *telk-e-ti ~ *telk-ti, from *telk- (to thrust, strike). Cognate with Lithuanian tel̃kti (assemble for collective assistance), Old Prussian tlāku (threshes, 3 sg.).
