From Early Proto-Slavic *ígrā˙[1], from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ígrāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ig-réh₂, from *h₂eyg- (to stir, set in motion). Cognate with Ancient Greek αἰγίς (aigís).
