Borrowed from Proto-Iranian *wacáh (yearling calf), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wet- (year). Other Uralic words from the same source include Erzya ваз (vaz), Moksha ваз (vaz) (both 'calf'), Mansi ва̄сиг (wāsig, moose calf).
