Etymology
From Spanish Joló, spelled historically as Xoló with the initial most likely pronounced with the Early Modern Spanish /ʃ/ sound, from Tausug Sulug (“Sulu”), an older form of Sūg (“Sulu”), possibly from Tausug sulug, an older form of sūg (“current”).[1] Compare Maranao Solog (“Sulu; Jolo”).
