Etymology

First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 일우다 (Yale: ilGwuta), a derived causative form of 일다 (Yale: ilta), "to rise". No longer perceived as a causative by modern speakers. From Old Korean 成留 (*Il).
