Of native Korean origin. From Middle Korean 물 (Yale: mwul). Compare Japanese 群れ (mure, “group, crowd, throng”).

First attested in the Hunmong jahoe (訓蒙字會 / 훈몽자회), 1527, as Middle Korean 모로 (Yale: mwolwo). Seo (2000) (徐廷範, 國語語源辭典) considered this cognate with 모레 (more, “the day after tomorrow”) (as in 내일모레 (來日—, naeilmore, “the day after tomorrow”) and the 마 (ma) in 마파람 (maparam, “south wind”). He postulated that all of the above were forms in which the ancient word for "sun" (*mol) was preserved.
