Etymology

First attested in the Dongmun yuhae (同文類解 / 동문유해), 1748, as Early Modern Korean ᄯᆞᆺᄯᆞᆺᄒᆞ다 (Yale: stostos-hota), equivalent to 따뜻 (ttatteut) + 하다 (-hada). The root 따뜻 (ttatteut) is a reduplication of Middle Korean ᄃᆞᆺ〮 (Yale: tós-, “warm”).
