First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean ᄃᆞᇰᄀᆡ〮다〮 (Yale: tòngkóy-tá). Cognate with 댕기다 (daenggida, to light, to kindle).
