Etymology
Borrowed from Japanese タバコ (tabako) or たばこ (tabako, “tobacco”). Found in 1614 as 담파고 (Yale: tamphakwo, 淡婆姑), and thereafter as 담파귀 (dampagwi), 담바 (damba), 담ᄇᆡ.

- Phonetic hangul: [담(ː)배/담(ː)베]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
