Etymology
Compound of 潜在 (senzai, “latent, underlying”) + 意識 (ishiki, “awareness, consciousness, mind”).[1][2][3]
Possibly a calque of German Unterbewusstsein (“subconscious”).
First cited to a 1912 English–German–French–Japanese dictionary of philosophical terms.[1]
