Etymology

Compound of 半(はん) (han-, “semi-”) + 母音(ぼいん) (boin, “vowel”).[1][2][3]

First cited to a text from 1912 with the now-obsolete reading of hanboon.[4] The reading appears to have shifted from hanboon to hanboin by 1922.[1]

      Boin to ifu mono wa aiueo no goji, hanboin to ifu mono wa waiueo no goji o ifu no de arimasu.
      ‘Vowels’ are the five letters a, i, u, e and o. ‘Semivowels’ are the five letters wa, wi, u, we and wo.
