Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *daʔ) : semantic 人 (“man”) + phonetic 宁 (OC *da, *daʔ).
Etymology
From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-ta-t (“to put; to place”). Cognate with 著 (OC *tas, *taɡ, *daɡ), 署 (OC *djas) (Schuessler, 2007).
