Etymology
The scepter of the Roman queen of the gods, Juno, surmounted by a star. The scepter took various forms, some rather elaborate, in the 19th century (see Juno for a slightly more intricate example), but soon a combination of an asterisk ⟨*⟩ and inverted dagger ⟨⸸⟩ were settled on for typographic convenience.
