фасоль

Russian

Etymology

Borrowed from Polish fasola, from Latin phaseolus.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [fɐˈsolʲ]
  • (file)

Noun

фасо́ль • (fasólʹ) f inan (genitive фасо́ли, nominative plural фасо́ли, genitive plural фасо́лей)

  1. (uncountable, collectively) beans
    Synonym: бобы (boby)

Usage notes

Apart from grammar (фасо́ль being a collective noun while бобы́ is not), the actual difference between бобы́ and фасо́ль, if any, is highly technical, and far from clear even to native Russian speakers. There may be a subconscious preference to refer to beans in a culinary context as "фасоль" and in an agricultural context as "бобы́", but this is not universal.

Declension

  • фасолеубо́рочный (fasoleubóročnyj)

Descendants

  • Kildin Sami: фассэль (fassel’, bean)
