1. (IPA) The hook tail that is characteristic of a retroflex consonant.

This diacritic should only be used when a dedicated character does not exist. The following characters are not canonically equivalent to the base letters plus ⟨◌̢⟩.

A vowel letter with a hook tail is now typically the allophone of a vowel next to a retroflex consonant, but historically these letters were used for rhotic vowels.

Unicode characters with a hook tail are,

lower case:

and superscript:

The Karlgren letters ʅ and ʯ do not have a hook tail, despite their appearance in many computer fonts, but rather a ⟨t⟩-like terminal curl.
